Latine Issues

Children of immigrants often navigate a complex landscape of cultural expectations and identity formation, which can give us unique strengths, while also present distinctive mental health challenges. As the eldest daughter of a mother from South America, I have firsthand experience with the intricate balance of holding traditional values while integrating into a dominant cultural milieu. This duality has shaped my understanding of the expectations placed upon me, including the sense of responsibility to uphold family traditions and support my family’s transition adaptation to their environment. These experiences have blessed me with resilience, adaptability, and a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives, which are valuable assets.
However, these strengths come with their own set of challenges. The weight of expectations and the pressure to reconcile two sometimes conflicting worlds can lead to stress, identity struggles, and feelings of isolation. I have seen how these pressures can sometimes create imbalances, such as the sacrifice of personal aspirations for familial duties, or the internal conflict between cultural heritage and the desire for individual identity. Additionally, it can be stressful to constantly be balancing the expectations of the dominant society with those that our family or culture practice.

I can’t speak highly enough of Dr. Carmen Lewis’ work with our clients. As an Immigration Attorney, for cases that involve hardship and past persecution, I refer clients to a psychologist to be evaluated for past trauma. Oftentimes identifying this past trauma and how it presently affects them is essential for their immigration case. And my clients’ experiences with Dr. Lewis have been wonderful. I would not refer them to anyone else.
